University Interscholastic League (UIL) Competition
University Interscholastic League (UIL) is an academic competition for students in 2nd through 5th grade.
FWISD students have enjoyed successfully competing in elementary UIL contests for several years. It is a goal of our district to provide UIL opportunities for all students. The contest events are in subject areas that are already taught in school, and subject matter of the tests is embedded in the curriculum. We will begin our UIL practice sessions after spring break.
Parent coaches work with small groups of students once or twice a week after school (or possibly during lunch) to prepare for their competition. Parent volunteers will receive study materials, coaching guidelines, practice tests, and rules for the competition. This is a great opportunity to work with kids on a specific area of interest to you both.
Areas of competition include:
- Grade 2 – Creative Writing, Storytelling
- Grade 3 – Music Memory, Ready Writing, Spelling, Storytelling
- Grade 4 – Art, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Spelling
- Grade 5 – Art, Dictionary Skills, Listening Skills, Maps/Graphs/Charts, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Social Studies, Spelling
We are looking for students who are interested in participating in one, or more, of these events. We are also looking for parent volunteers who are interested in coaching a group of 3 – 5 students for each event. If you are interested in learning more about UIL, or think you might want to participate, please contact: Gloria Daniels
