George Shannon

posted Sep 30, 2011 9:23 AM by Suzy Parchman   [ updated Sep 30, 2011 9:30 AM ]

On September 26, author George Shannon spoke to our students in PK-Grade 3.  He shared lots of information on getting ideas, writing and revising.  Later, a first grader told me that the most important thing he learned was that writers write about every day things.  Another said that she really liked the idea of keeping a "Maybe, Maybe Journal."  This is what Shannon called his composition books that he uses to explore ideas.  Another student remembered that Shannon said changing your story to make it better is never a mistake!

Thank you PTA for sponsoring this event.

Summer Reading at Lily B. Clayton

posted Jun 2, 2011 12:07 PM by Suzy Parchman

Calling all Lily B. students:

Don’t forget to participate in the Fort Worth Public Library Summer Reading Challenge and return your completion certificate when school starts to be included in an August free dress day and earn a chance to win prizes, including a Barnes and Noble NOOK eReader.

Calling all Lily B. parents:

Please encourage your children to read as much as possible this summer.  Research indicates that students who read over the summer will improve their skills and students who don’t will regress.  Students should read materials that interest them and summer is a great time to try out different formats and genres, whether it’s nonfiction, graphic novels, picture books or traditional novels.

If you are worried about what to choose, consult the STAR Diagnostic Reports that were sent home for each student for personalized recommendations.  The Fort Worth Public Library offers a limited list of recommended reading as well:  http://www.fortworthgov.org/library/info/default.aspx?id=10114.

When you are in the public library, don’t forget you can always ask a librarian for suggestions too! What students read is not nearly as crucial as the fact that they continue to read regularly.  Regular visits to the library will whet children’s appetites for reading--at no cost.  But if you'll be frequenting book stores during your vacation, know that both Barnes and Noble and Borders are offering opportunities for students to earn free books by completing reading logs available at their websites or in their stores.
